Seen here judging the 2010 Air New Zealand Haka Competition at then head office of New Zealand’s national carrier.

Shelford was questioned about how he won so many matches as an All Black. He replied that it was because they flew Air New Zealand.

The ex-Bay of Plenty and NZ Maori midfielder was providing sideline comments during the round 8 ITM Cup game between Bay of Plenty and Counties Manukau.

There was a strong wind following a storm earlier in the week and Rua Tipoki was dressed accordingly, down to his Red Band gumboots.

Things got colder later in the game inspiring Tipoki to hood up, adopting the look of the Empire’s armoured vehicle crewman in their garrrison gear.

We have been stalking Sumo for a while now and finally managed to corner him at a BKs in Hamilton.

In episode one we talk about early rugby memories.

In Episode#2 we talk about post match rituals – a little unimaginative perhaps.

And in Episode#3, we start to explore Sumo’s raw sexuality

A proud proponent of man-love, a truly sexy man doesn’t know when he’s at his best.

But seriously …

Scotty Stevenson’s background is in marketing and journalism.

He studied Communications at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and worked for several advertising agencies.

He also writes as a freelancer – something that is more hobby nowadays than bread-winning but he seems to enjoy keeping a hand in.

Like all of our modern story tellers, Stevenson spent time behind a bar.

Those of you who worked in the lower Federal Street area of downtown Auckland may remember him from Mo’s Bar – the tiny street corner outlet with the huge prices.

I recall one of those morning after moments when each EFTPOS receipt that you pull out of your pockets is met with deepening cringes.

There were other establishments in the Hobson Street and Ponsonby areas before he settled on his dream job at Sky TV.

Stevenson has an easy rapport, well and truly at home in Rugbyland.

He is approachable and accommodating and although we didn’t get to the subject, from his attitudes I would guess he had a working class background.

Despite the stubble and casual look, ‘Sumo’ is a professional – articulate and measured – all within the fresh persona that he brings to New Zealand rugby commentary.

George Smith cut his off over a year ago leaving very few dreadlocks in the Australian Super 14 teams. Faingaa is doing very well since his move from the Brumbies. He is particularly busy around the field, throwing himself into rucks with no regard for his personal safety.

Sports Journalist and TV presenter Ric Salizzo brought an entourage to Eden park to watch home side Auckland defeat Southland in the New Zealand NPC competition.

Legendary New Zealand rugby sevens coach, Gordon Teitjens took in the bay of Plenty Steamers win over neighbours Waikato in the New Zealand NPC rugby competition.

Ex-New Zealand sevens captain Karl Tenana was there in his capacity as a TV commentator for Sky, reuniting the key forces behind New Zealand’s 2002 Commonwealth Gold Medal.

Tenana remains in 5th place on the all time sevens rugby try scorers list with 113 tries and number 6 all time for the Hong Kong Sevens with 17.
