USA Sevens - full of colour and style

The New Zealand Sevens in Wellington attracts a huge number of men wearing dresses.

Rugby personality, Melodie Robinson felt this was a very healthy thing for the New Zealand male (assuming they were mostly New Zealanders). Putting aside their inhibitions was thought to be therapeutic and the airflow that a dress affords was befitting the summer heat in the nation’s capital.

The area that let them down however was the breasts so we went to Las Vegas to check out whether the USA Sevens had men in dresses and if so, how they went about moulding their breasts for the occasion.

There were not a lot of males wearing dresses in the crowd but we did find 1-2 masculine beauties that were kind enough to give us an interview.

We will stay with this story to see how it evolves in the remainder of the World Sevens Series and try and get a comment from tournament organisers.

Kurt Baker - 'see, no white!'

New Zealand’s Kurt Baker has recently removed his old trademark white patch from the back of his head.

Being connoisseurs of fashion, the French Rugby Sevens team didn’t believe him: “Elle est toujours là” they said.

Baker felt he needed to prove it – “Regardez, il est allé ” (‘Look, it’s gone!’).

But Baker’s French needs work because it came out something like: “tu ne peux pas m’empêcher de grenouille” (‘You can’t stop me, Frog!’).

With Baker out of the running (for the moment), it leaves the Sevens world wide open for a new hair guy.

And we think we found him …

Theo Henry from Guyana had the best hair at the USA leg of IRB Sevens World Series.

Henry somewhat conservatively estimated his locks were ‘about 2ft long’.

We didn’t have time to get the tape measure out but would have liked to because it’s entirely possible that he has some that are longer than that.

However Henry is not a tall man so it wouldn’t put him in the same league as Mount Maunganui’s Mata McGrath because he is 6ft 4in tall but Henry and Guyana made a bold statement at the Las Vegas event.

What about the weight of all that hair?

While Henry said it didn’t bother him, we could see that long hair could weigh a player down (at least psychologically) in a demanding game like Sevens Rugby.

We spoke to Thretton Palamo from the USA Sevens team about his hairstyle and he had some interesting insights to offer the debate.

Leonard Peters, USA Sevens

Since the departure of Todd Clever for full-time professional rugby in the Southern Hemisphere’s Super 14, we have noted that the new team have been expressing themselves more and more these days.

We will stay with the story because the USA Sevens team may just have the longest dreads in rugby in the form of Leonard Peters.

We are going to start by getting the tape measure out for Mata McGrath back in new Zealand and then (hopefully) catching up with Peters at the Adelaide Sevens in Australia in March.

The modern netball skirt is a dress for all

The number of men who took this opportunity was staggering and either scary or healthy depending upon your point of view.

The New Zeland netball uniform was re-designed in early 1990s by an Otago University student.

It was first worn by the Otago team in the national provincial championship before it was adopted whole scale by most of the world’s netballing fraternity.

The model seen here belongs to the Canterbury range and highlights the classic vertical look.

The Wellington Sevens provided an opportunity for men to enjoy the fitting but flexible design.

There was however one major issue that seemed to thwart the effectiveness of the cross-dressing opportunity.

Melodie Robinson identified it before the second day started and it was breasts.

Apparently the men had failed to grasp the concept …
